The Joker is a fictional character, a comic book supervillain and archenemy of Batman who routinely plagues Gotham City (and the rest of the DC Universe) throughout the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. He is a widely feared figure throughout the DC Universe, due to his complete unpredictability and unrestrained cruelty.

Known as the Clown Prince of Crime, the Harlequin of Hate, and many other monikers, The Joker is one of the most (in)famous supervillains in existence. His body count has soared into the thousands, and he has, on many occasions, driven others to near or even complete madness. Though such actions would usually warrant a death penalty, The Joker is often found not guilty by reason of insanity, and incarcerated in Arkham Asylum.

Fictional Character BiographyEdit

A "true" origin story for The Joker has never been established, due to the chaotic nature of his mind negating the authenticity of any flashback that he may have about his past. The most widely accepted origin story for the Clown Prince of Crime stems from Alan Moore's 1988 graphic novel The Killing Joke, which featured The Joker's former self as a struggling man who had quit his job at a chemical plant for a (failed) career of stand-up comedy. Desperate to provide a decent life for his pregnant wife, the comedian agrees to help two gangsters break into a playing card factory next door to the chemical plant where he had once worked at, but on the day of the heist, he is informed that his wife had died from a freak accident involving a baby-bottle heater.

The comedian's misfortune, however, does not stop there; the robbery goes horribly wrong, and the two gangsters are shot dead as a result. He himself, having adopted the identity of "The Red Hood" (which the gangsters claim will protect his identity during the robbery) is confronted by Batman, and, in a panic, the comedian leaps into one of the chemical processing tanks below him. He survives this ordeal and swims into the river that the tank empties into, but realizes, upon removing his hood, that the chemicals had turned his skin chalk white, his hair a vivid green, his lips ruby red, and his mouth into a grotesque smile. It is at this point that the man's mind snaps, and The Joker is born.
